What is unmetered hosting?

"What is unmetered hosting" you might wonder when browsing around for a new host, and what difference does it make to me? The answer to the first part is quite simple: Whereas some hosts will monitor and require you to stay within certain monthly bandwidth limits, a host offering an unmetered hosting account will allow you unlimited bandwidth usage. If it's relevant for you to have unmetered hosting or not, really depends on your plans with the website. For personal websites, that never receive massive amounts of traffic, going for an unmetered hosting account doesn't make much sense. On the other hand, if you plan to launch a site where you expect a lot of traffic, you might want to make sure that the connection doesn't get shut down in the middle of the month due to too high bandwidth usage.

So, do I need unlimited bandwidth you might wonder. Well, let's make a small calculation example:

If the average page on your site is 25,000 bytes (25kb), and you get 1000 visitors per day each browsing through 5 pages this would generate about 3.8 GB/month traffic.

Many hosts today are offering unlimited traffic since they are well aware that offering a limit of e.g. 500GB/month might scare off potential customers, of which 99% would never get close to the limit anyway. However, on budget hosting plans, you will often still see traffic limitations. On a last note, you should also be aware that there is probably no such thing as a free lunch, or in this case, free bandwidth. If you shoot your traffic through the roof, you will most probably get contacted by your host asking to consider an upgrade. So, last word about this should be ummetered is a lot of bandwidth but it's not infinite!
